Background

Northern Power has been a leader in mid-sized wind power technology for over 30 years, and is bringing its gearless technology expertise to bear on both distributed and large-scale utility markets.  The company’s hallmark 100kW turbine platform now boasts over one million operating hours and is sized specifically for distributed wind applications such as villages, schools/universities, farms, municipalities, and business campuses, where there is increasing end user demand for economical renewable power.  Northern is also scaling its gearless architecture to a 2.3MW platform, where it expects to differentiate itself in the utility market with best-in-class energy capture, high reliability and low cost of maintenance.

Our Partnership

Northern is an innovative wind turbine manufacturer that in 2008 underwent a recapitalization.  As active investors in the recapitalization, RockPort saw the enormous opportunity its gearless technology offered, and as an active investor has brought deep industry experience to bear in transforming Northern from an R&D organization into a customer focused commercial entity.  Now, Northern has emerged as a leader in the nascent but growing distributed (or “community”) wind market with its Northwind 100, which is proven to offer best-in-class reliability.  We believe direct drive will also be the wind technology of the future at the utility scale, and the company has developed a 2.3MW platform which should be uniquely positioned to capitalize on this market opportunity.
