Powerspan is engaged in the development and commercialization of proprietary clean energy technology for the electric power industry. The Company’s patented Electro-Catalytic Oxidation (ECO®) technology is a cost-effective, multi-pollutant control technology for existing and new coal-fired power plants. The ECO process removes sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, mercury, and fine particulate matter in one integrated system. The Company is also demonstrating CO2 capture technology, which is also suitable for existing and new coal-based power plants. Powerspan’s CO2 capture process is differentiated from other approaches by its simpler capital equipment design and significantly lower energy consumption.
RockPort is wary of investments where there is significant regulatory risk. But our collective policy experience leaves us comfortable exploring certain regulatory-driven areas of the energy sector – one of which is clean air. When we met the Powerspan team we felt they had a real value proposition, for a big market (air pollution control), that had a positive core regulatory underpinning (Clean Air Act Amendments, CAIR, various state initiatives). We’ve been delighted to see the Company make great progress in a brutally competitive sector.
